Harry Potter Party Invitations

This is how I spent my morning rather than getting on the bike ... which, I guess, makes it kinda on topic ;)

John's birthday is in June and he decided about two chapters in to reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone that he wants a Harry Potter theme for his party. I've been pillaging the web in general and spending lots of time on Pinterest trying to come up with ideas and had a brainstorm late last night on how I might be able to pull off owls to deliver the invitations. My intention was to do one as a trial run but then John got involved and before I knew it we had everything done for the invitations .... except for the actual invitations themselves!

I found a clipart owl that I thought would be fun to use as a template and printed two of them out - one for the body and one for the belly area. The bodies got traced and cut out of colored card stock and the bellies on various sheets of scrapbook paper I have to use as background for lunch pictures. I also found a bag of foam shapes in the dollar bin at our drugstore that I figured would be good for eyes and noses.




But how to get them to hold the invitations?!?!? Glue gun and paperclips to the rescue!

(I actually out the glue directly on the paperclip and then put it on the back of the wing -- but that was impossible to take a picture of!)


Now all I need to do is make the invitations ... and figure out the cake and other food ... and plan out how to make a backyard Quidditch course ... and ... be very thankful I have until June to do it all!

Onwards!

The stomach bug appears to have left the building! Hooray!!! I wish it had left in time for me to finish off my 4 days of 40 minutes but I only fell short by 20 minutes so that's not SO bad.

This week the Spring Into Action mini-challenge is to step outside of our comfort zones. I joked with some of my challenge peeps that maybe I would try a different flavor of Ben & Jerry's. Really. I was kidding. (Almost entirely.)

I've actually got a couple of things I'm going to tackle this week that typically put me on edge:

* Fitness Over Facebook -- I get out of work at 7amish, home by 7:20ish, and then head John out the door at 8:30ish and am back home and my way to bed 9ish (unless I'm really lucky and the bus is close to on time ... or really UNlucky and it's even later than usual). Besides making sure he gets ready for school and gets his medicine in him all I typically do after getting home is plop myself in front of the computer and putter on Facebook. Because, you know, I don't spend 6-7 hours a night puttering enough at work. I should be able to get myself on the bike for at least half an hour... wouldn't you think?

* Going Public -- Well, not completely public but I have changed my diary setting on MyFitnessPal to not being private. If we're friends you'll be able to see what I've logged ... starting today. I actually went through and deleted about a month and a half of settings. I've tweaked goals and numbers and diary settings and the days I did bother to track just looked ridiculous.

Speaking of tracking, I was thinking making another crack at pre-tracking meals. We all know that's not at all comfortable for me. Then I remembered that my grocery situation is pretty bleak at the moment and might be until next week. I don't even know what I have in my house right now but I know that it's not much.

4 days of 40 minutes

Remember? That's the Spring Into Action mini-challenge for the week.... and I *MAY* pull it off. I got in two real good 40+ minute rides on the recumbent. I walked to/from the grocery store the other day which the Bugg claimed as another 40+ minutes of moderate activity (I feel strange about counting it, though, because I needed to do it. I refuse to pay bus fair for groceries). Today I tried to bike but after about 20 minutes I was feeling miserable. Still am, in fact. It's a pepto & flat gingerale kinda night at work. Didn't even bother bringing any food. We've got soup around here somewhere if I end up starving and decide to risk it. I'm hoping it's just a temporary gurgle and that tomorrow I can knock off my last 40 minutes. I hate the idea of not finishing it! It may be a slow and pathetic 40 but that's okay, too.... right?

This and That and The Other

This: That whole pre-planning menus idea? Not getting into it. Maybe after a really good grocery trip ... which won't be possible for another couple of weeks at least. Instead I'm prepared with my recipe cards that match my new recipe box and will, hopefully, get filled with lovely noms!


That: The first week of the Shrinking Jeans Spring Into Action challenge is now a thing of the past and cutting the carbs (not completely, but a whole heck of a lot) seems to have helped since I actually lost just over 2 pounds! Of course, yo-yo that I am that means it's just undoing more recent damage done. I'll really start getting giddy about stuff in about 10 more pounds.

The Other: This week our task is to exercise for 40 minutes at least 4 days. I told John that he has to help me get it done. Granted, part of that will be by making sure the floor of his playroom is picked up and Lego-free so I don't kill myself while going for the Wii Fit. Nothing today because he had a half day of school which meant very little sleep for me and I just wasn't feeling it.

Really, I mean it ... I think ...

I keep telling myself that I'm going to pre-plan meals. I even tossed a menu pad in my bag for work last week ... or the week before ...

I'm currently less than an hour into my work shift and really have nothing left to do until people start waking up and needing stuff. I should be able to accomplish something more than just watching lots of tv on my ipad and playing silly Facebook games.

Yowza!

We got pummeled with snow yesterday to the point where John had the day off from school and a 2-hour delay today AND I got the night off from work since the 2nd shift guy wasn't able to drive home and they didn't want me to worry about having to get there last night and then back out this morning. Darn good thing, too! We REALLY got slammed with heavy white stuff!
Instead of having to walk through this to the bus stop, I got to go to bed!

Yesterday was the start of the Shrinking Jeans Spring Into Action Challenge. We're doing teams this time and I already love mine even though we didn't know each other at all until we were actually going "EEK! Who else still needs a team???" on Facebook. One of the first tasks was to weigh-in ... with a picture of the scale. It's been a while since I've shared a scale pic ... and it might be a while before I do so again ...
Ugh.

We had to come up with our own mini-challenge for the week for our team and we've decided to each pick our "thing" to cut. For me it's white grains -- pasta, white rice, bread. Really, the only white bread I ever have are sandwich rolls but the pasta and rice? That'll be tough. It's not called a "challenge" for nothing, right?

I'm thinking ....

The weekend was, yet again, hit and miss. I got a couple of decent workouts but not nearly what I probably should have and the food ... well ... whatever. I may try menu planning yet again. I wing it too often and even when I do bother planning as far as what to bring to work I don't seem to plan well. It shouldn't be too hard seeing as how there isn't a ton of food in the house to choose from and that's unlikely to change until this next weekend ... and even that's up in the air. It also makes it a bit easier since I really only have to plan for myself and John and I swear John would be perfectly happy with peanut butter & jelly 5 nights a week. (Don't judge. He's got issues upon issues and we choose our battles -- pb&j for dinner if whatever I make seems too whatever isn't a battle I'm going to undertake.)

I would really like to have someone just come in to my house and go through everything we have on hand and figure it all out for me.

No.... not really.

I might feel compelled to clean first. *shudder*

The MoveIt Playlist

It needs to be updated ... or at least I need another playlist with some of the songs I've added since this was made and some more suggested by my Shrinking Jeans gals ... but this is how I'm currently freaking out my cat (and how I moved a little bit more on my way to and from the grocery store):

Good intentions and other worthless crap

I had every intention of riding the recumbent or doing some Wii Fit Tuesday .... and Wednesday.

I did neither on either.

I had every intention of making sure I had decent food with me at work both night to get through my shift without raiding the snack closet or gnawing off an arm.

My arms are both in tact. The snack closet has seen better days.

I'm not going to beat myself up over any of it, though. All that will do is make everything more difficult to deal with. Instead I'm just going to say "eh, it happens" and when I get home from work I'm going to plan a little better. At least for Thursday.

Three days down (and Friend Makin' Mondays ... on Tuesday)

So far March isn't awful. It isn't stellar, but it isn't awful. I got in a couple of bike workouts on the new Death Machine (it has yet to become my Mind Palace like the last bike was) and knocked off a half hour with the Wii Fit Plus. Getting better at the balance-based games slowly but surely. Tried some of the strength training activities and kept being told I wasn't ready yet. Lovely. I've already put the Jillian Michaels' Fitness Ultimatum "game" to one side because I'm not in good enough shape for most of it yet.

I'll get there. Some day.

Food has been .... well .... it's been.

I've been thinking that maybe I .... I dunno. I know I need some sorta something besides just thee ol' calorie count hanging over my head. Something South Beachish but not. Too many restrictions make me want to shoot myself in the face, ya know? Maybe limit grain intake to work meals only & one meal a day for my days off. I can't go completely pasta/oatmeal/potato free .... not even for the couple of weeks the first Phase of SB would be. Again .... it's the whole "shoot myself in the face" thing.

I'll figure it out. Some day.

I've got 2 1/2 hoursish left to my shift tonight. (My work computer keeps randomly rebooting itself -- it's taken me 2 1/2 hours just to write this much! YIKES!) I've caught up on all of the shows I watch without Tom aside from the Australian/original version of Rake that I only started watching this afternoon anyway. I could continue with that but I think I'll spend the remainder of my time tonight/this morning/whatever with good ol' Dandy. I'm 62% in and still haven't figured out whodunnit .... which is strange and fascinating all at the same time.

The first movie I remember seeing was Star Wars as a double feature with Empire Strikes Back when that was first released. I was 4 1/2 at the time and already a little geekling!

4. Did you watch The Oscars last night?
I didn't even remember they were on until my Facebook feed started exploding with commentary!

5. How many of the Best Picture nominations did you watch and which did you enjoy the most?
I haven't seen any of them this year.

6. What did you think of Ellen hosting The Oscars?
I love Ellen so I'm sure she did a great job!

7. If you had the chance to play a part in any movie, what would it be?
Jo Stockton -- Audrey Hepburn's character in Funny Face. I was obsessed with that part when I was growing up .... until I saw Love In The Afternoon 

8. Is there a movie you have watched that was so bad that you have either walked out of the cinema or turned it off?
Tom and I have turned off quite a few things that we haven't wanted to waste our time on. I only recall walking out of a cinema once and it was so bad that I can't even remember what the movie was or who was in it. I was just glad I only paid $2 for the ticket and ended up getting it back anyway!


9. What do you think of 3D and IMAX movies? Are they worth the extra money?
I love them both! The only IMAX I've seen is our annual trip to see The Polar Express in our one domed IMAX theater here but we'll typically splurge on the 3D when we bother going to the movies now.

10. What was the last movie you saw at the cinema?
We took John to see The Lego Movie (in 3D) last weekend. It was phenomenal! I love it when they make kids movies enjoyable for adults, too!
